Michelle, you correctly point out that people involved may have forgotten the reason they are fighting in the first place, but I’m not sure the answer lies in passivity. The U.S. should approach negotiations with historical context and reference to the religious and cultural differences that predate the conflict, including America’s previous involvement in the conflict and the differences between Western and Eastern powers.
