Reply To: Faydra Shapiro explained that modern Jews read the New Testament through a very different lens than Catholics. In addition to theological differences, Jews are weary of the “Christian book” because they read it through the legacy of anti-Jewish sentiments held by the Church throughout history. Explain the historic and theological reasons why modern Jews are skeptical about embarking on deeper inter-faith relations with Catholics.

I think we just need to admit that Christianity is a heresy of Judiaism, as viewed from a Jewish perspective. Can Christians maintain their own claims to offering the “ordinary” means of salvation without falling into supersecessionism? The alternative seems to be Two Covenant theory, which the church has rejected. So we can’t really say that unlike other religions, Judaism also offers full salvation just like Christianity, but in a different flavor, like chocolate vs vanilla — pick your favorite, it’s just a matter of taste. But I’m still confused on how the church can say that Judaism is as valid a religion as Christianity but yet we’re not saying there are Two Covenants. The quote from that long-titled Vatican document about salvation of the Jews even after Jesus being a “mystery” seems to be as far as any Christian can go at this point.
