Reply To: In your opinion, why is it important for Christians to stand up for religious freedom for people of all faiths, and not just our own?

Part of enjoying the freedom of your own religious beliefs requires the tolerance of other religious beliefs. History has shown that discriminating against other religions or imposing your beliefs on others has had a detrimental impact on society. It fosters an environment of ignorance and intolerance. Protecting the religious freedoms of all faiths creates a more open and understanding community. Learning about the beliefs of others challenges us to better understand our own beliefs. It is healthy to engage in respectful dialogue and disagreement. This is how we grow individually and as a community. No one should feel persecuted because of their beliefs. No one should feel compelled to hide out of fear of opposition. As a Christian in America I am more apt to encounter “nones” than other faith traditions. However, I see engaging with Muslims and Jews similar to my engagement with nones. I have to listen and be open-minded and attempt to understand their position. I find people are more open to meaningful dialogue when approached this way.
