Reply To: In Lecture 2, Dr. Dru Johnson mentions that there has been a decline in biblical literacy in the Church. After taking this course, what are some recommendations you would give to church leadership to increase biblical literacy?

My suggestion follows a trend I am hearing of in Catholic circles, namely that many youth and young adults are experiencing a “boom” in the relevance and presence of Scripture in their spiritual lives, contrary to the common stereotypes regarding Catholics and Scripture. I would emphasize to strike on this spiritual iron while it is hot, and truly emphasize how embedded Scripture is within Catholic thought and life. A profound example of this illustrative ministering would include the liturgy, showing how Scripture is wrapped up in the prayers, movements, and experience of the Mass. Catholicism does a good job of living out a theology that is deeply rooted in the Bible. Unfortunately, such Scriptural basis for elements of Catholic theology can look different, just as modern Italian is distinct from Latin. Catholic liturgy, in my view, operates precisely as how Dr. Johnson suggests one ought to interpret their present situation through a Biblical lens!
