Reply To: What were your primary takeaways after reading “Lebanon: Past Challenges, Present Calamities, Future Prospects”? Is there hope for preserving a pluralistic Lebanon in the future?

What I see in a spiritual perspective is a grand religious and also spiritual battle that is on-ground, and to know Lebanon’s role in a deeper way is very interesting, specially considering its geographic placement and history. How the only near-eastern country that could eventually welcome people of distinct religious backgrounds live in peace, come catastrophically to an end tainted by death, corruption and even a very modern explosion in the middle of the city because of religious agendas, give us a perspective that is unprecedented. I see the painted atmosphere that would beautifully allow for a whole generation’s development during the christian ascendancy to a critical downfall for all of us to witness during the sunni’s and Shia’s ascendancy. Due to religious wars, we can see the consequences of regimes and systems that enforce state-approved violence and terrorism as happening with today’s Iranian support to Hezbollah. So what is it of today’s expectancy? Through the Bible’s words, it is only going to get worse and these are the signs of pregnancy pains. Therefore, under these critical circumstances I recall Charles Malik words and understand them deeply in the role of christian communities today in Lebanon for their own healing which states: “it is better to be in the known from the inside than in the unknown from the outside”, as well as recalling God’s words: “I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death”.
