I believe that it is only possible for Christians to engage accurately in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict when we have the humility to remember the past. It is easy to moralize about how either Israel or Palestine/the Arab world are wrong, and how we (as individuals) or our countries would always act in better ways – but that is a very presumptuous thing to claim. Humans are weak, and are quick to get caught up in blame and accusations, especially under peer pressure. And it is true that Christians have in the past acted in blatantly ungodly and unchristian ways towards the Jewish people. If we are to seek real truth and justice, and if we are to be adamant about protecting human dignity, we have to remember that we Christians are only one or two generations away from having acted with much discrimination ourselves – and then be grateful for the grace we, in this moment, have been given to see more clearly.
