This is an excellent insight! I think this teaches a great lesson for missionaries in the present and future. In China for example, there is not only a modern-day Chinese church, but also a long history of indigenous Christianity, with its own legacy and customs for modern Christian evangelists to draw on. I wonder how we can refocus missionary efforts to strengthen the indigenous Christian roots that exist in much of the world, rather than attempting to pave over them with Western-style Christianity exclusively.
