The first way is to have more proximity. I come from a reformed background. I also live and work at a Christian Camp. Because this is a parachurch organization, there are people that I work along side of who hold differing theological and denominational convictions. Within this year I visited a messianic tabernacle with a few friends, it was very encouraging to meet people who were worshiping the same risen Savior even though we might not have agreed on all of the secondary issues.

The second way is to be a good listener. So many disagreements and arguments could be better handled if people were willing to listen to the other side. How can I rightly communicate your viewpoint to someone if I don’t truly understand where they are coming from.

The third way is to find common ground. After meeting someone and listening to them, it can be helpful in order to keep the door open, to start with agreement and move towards disagreement. Start by reiterating the things that can be agreed on and establishing common ground. Then there might be an opportunity to tackle a more hot button issue.
