I agree with you, it is true that the Old Testament is more than “stories”; it is the compilation of various histories! But we refer to them as stories so that the habit of reading them within a fixed framework remains in our minds. I think that the Bible is an excellent source of “world” information–it has information on the origins of man, evolution of creatures, and even Jesus’ return to earth! Assuming that all goes well, Jesus will come back and claim his iron throne! Do you feel comfort knowing that at some point of the human age, we will see the Kingdom? I think this goes beyond the chosen–it is for those who truly believe in the Lord and all he has to offer. But we have to follow his directions, first. I think that is why it is so important to enforce a reading of the Old and New Testaments at home as children. The narratives stay with us, even as we learn better.
