Mary, it occurs to me that this episode of Jewish reception in the DR may have been mentioned in ‘La fiesta del chivo’ the harrowing chronicle fictionalising Trujillo’s reign (In English, ‘The feast of the goat’ 2000). I recall how engrossing the novel was, although it’s been a quarter of a century now since I read it. He’s one of the best writers, in my opinion, of our times, and perhaps those on this list may seek him out.
