Throughout last semester I attended two ‘Not-Shabbat Shabbat Dinners’ with my campus’ Hillel. This was because they were held on Thursdays, instead of the traditional day for it, Fridays. The event was interesting because the students at Hillel all came from various denominations. Earlier in the year I had gone to a Shabbat Dinner at an Orthodox Rabbi’s house, and while we were there it was more formal, and the rabbi washed his hands before he ate the food. At my Hillel, the students/staff said prayers but did not have a ritual washing of hands. It made me wonder if this practice was more valued in Orthodox settings than in others.
