Yes, it is interesting how Trujillo wanted to bring them in not for altruistic reasons, but to “lighten the skin tone of the population” and regain popularity back after he was under international fire for killing Dominicans with Haitian ancestry along the border. It reminds me of when countries would take in Jews because they thought they could help with the economy, but then discard/turn against them whenever it worked in their favor.
