Stephen Cochrane’s exploration in “Christian Communities of the Near East: Past, Present, and Future” illuminates lesser-known aspects of early Asian Christianity. The enduring resilience of Asian Christians amid severe persecution and their pioneering global missionary efforts, predating Western expansions, surprised and fascinated me. The Church of the East’s theological roots in Theodore of Mopsuestia, its monastic traditions paralleling Western developments, and the pivotal role of figures like Narsai and Timothy I highlight a vibrant, yet often overlooked, Christian narrative deeply intertwined with cultural and theological richness in the Near East.
