Reply To: In the first lecture, Dr. McDermott teaches that the Bible is one story, and that God upholds his covenant with the Jewish people to this very day. Was this what you were taught growing up? If not, how will this insight change the way you read the bible going forward?

Hi Audra,

The first church I attended was First Assemblies of God. I remember as a child reading much of the Old Testament and learning about the Torah. As I grew up, the Old Testament turned into ‘fun Bible stories’ while the New Testament shifted into focus. In my adult years, I have found that many churches barely preach on the Old or New Testament, and instead focus on cherry-picking Bible verses and offering his or her own interpretation of the Bible verses. It is sad that today, some children are truly not learning the fundamentals. They’re not learning that the Bible is our history.
