Between the churches I have regularly attended and the sermons of pastors I’ve visited or watched online, I agree that there is a decline in biblical literacy in the Church. Many church leaders desire to show how the Bible has a life application for their congregants. There is certainly merit to that, but what about the life application the Bible had for the people featured in the Bible?
I would recommend that church leadership understand the importance of communicating the background of the specific scenarios within the Bible, and how they fit together as a whole. Instead of TELLING congregants a singular life application that might apply to them specifically, SHOW them the background of the passage for its day and age and how it hyperlinks to other Scripture. The congregants will still get a life application that is so much in demand, but they will also have a better understanding of the Bible passage that leads to that conclusion as well as cross-references that could lead them to further life applications.
