Maggie, that is so true. I live just outside of DC in Alexandria, VA, and I think the transience of this place really contributes to people not wanting to invest in their local communities (through local politics or otherwise). I think that often people who live in the suburbs of a city are more involved in things within the city; they don’t necessarily want to invest in their local community or have much love for it. Rootedness is so important for thriving communities. I recently joined a church in Alexandria with members who are in their 70s or 80s who have lived in this area their whole lives, and it’s so interesting to get their perspectives.
