I recently attended a missions conference for my denomination this week, and a couple of the visiting missionaries were a husband-wife team based in India, both of whom were Indian nationals themselves. While giving their testimonies, they talked about their experiences with different Christian traditions in India (including Baptists and Anglicanism) before joining an Evangelical church. They offhandedly mentioned rubbing shoulders with St. Thomas Christians. I asked whether the St. Thomas Christian community was gospel-centered, in their opinion, given their unimpressed comments about the compromised state of the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches in India. Surprisingly, they reported that the St. Thomas Christians were spiritually vibrant and authentic to the gospel message.
