I was also surprised that some Jews consider the Messiah to be an age! It think the coming of the Messiah is expected to bring about peace for the land and for all people, and the Jews in the Bible who did not believe in Jesus had expected Him to conquer the Romans, rebuild the physical temple, etc., so I think they believe that the event would be obvious to non-Jews as well.
