It is incredible just how complex this situation is! Friedman did not even mention religion at all in his article, and yet that is the topic that most people probably assume would determine the extent of the conflict. It is particularly fascinating to me that historic influence from world superpowers has shaped so much of it even from far away; some of the conflict is truly local and historic, some is just modern proxy friction, and there is so much else in between.
