Reply To: Have you ever been told that supporting Israel prevents you from supporting Palestinians? After taking this course, how would you go about responding to false accusations like this?

Yes, I have heard this from both Muslim and liberal Jewish friends. I would respond to that support for both should not need to be mutually exclusive, and I hope I would have the chance to discuss the complexity and nuance. As a UN intern several years ago I had the opportunity to attend many conferences and meetings with the general assembly and security council on the topic of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and one thing in particular that stood out to me was how the Israeli representatives would mention other neighboring countries that were also responsible for their treatment of Palestinian people, etc., but which the UN entities did not think merited similar resolutions. As others have noted already here, as with any other controversial issue it always takes a lot of time and effort (as well as bravery) to step back and form your own opinions based on primary-source research and foundational principles, instead of responding emotionally or merely taking one side at their word without further investigation.
