I wonder how he, and the rest of our founding generation, would respond to the events of the last 100 years. Isolationist to the core, how would he interpret America’s heroic action in WWII, our shameful dismissal of Jewish refugees, and finally our support of the newly ratified Jewish state?
We do know that he bore the US-based Jewish community at the time goodwill, eg his Rhode Island address… “May the Children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other Inhabitants; while every one shall sit under his own vine and fig tree, and there shall be none to make him afraid.”
What makes this even more interesting is our founders’ admiration for what they called “The Hebrew Republic.” They were deeply influenced by the covenant of the Jewish people with God, as opposed to the simple appointment of kings by divine fiat. Kings, for the Old Testament, were a late and lamentable addition.
