It is certainly in the United States’ best interest to be a friend of Israel. But I also think it behooves us to assist in mediating a peaceful resolution between the Israelis and the Palestinians. The key, though, is that we must be consistent. We have to be careful not to show more favoritism to another group or nation as that will break down negotiations. There is no room for negotiating with Hamas as they are a terror organization. But I think there is much room for negotiating with the many Palestinians who want a peaceful resolution with Israel. We have to be careful, though, to not impose our own views on how this resolution should work. Governments in the Middle East are far more tied to religion than our own, making it nearly impossible for our form of government to function in those nations. We should also be careful not to get involved militarily but solely diplomatically at this point.
