Reply To: In the first lecture, Dr. McDermott teaches that the Bible is one story, and that God upholds his covenant with the Jewish people to this very day. Was this what you were taught growing up? If not, how will this insight change the way you read the bible going forward?

Interesting! I grew up in a Baptist church which was extremely focused on doctrine, including dispensationalism (so an emphasis on God’s continuing covenant with Israel), and sometimes too light on application or practical living. Honestly, I feel like my church background helped me develop my interest in theology, as I was always encouraged to study, research, ask questions, etc. That just goes to show how very much Baptist churches in particular vary from church to church, since they are all autonomous. It sounds like you have significantly diverged from your church background in that sense. I know it’s a challenging journey because I diverge from my church background in other areas. Hoping it’s been a good journey for you!
