In hindsight it seems incredibly obvious I suppose but it has never been taught to me at all and I have never known that Jews view their expected messianic figure as just a man. I have always viewed the Savior being the Son of God being necessary to the aim of ultimate victory over sin and death as God is the only one who could. I have learned of Jesus’ fingerprints and presence in the Old Testament, ala “Let Us Make man,” so to hear that the Jews do not believe that their long awaited savior is God or Son of God in any way was actually quite a peculiar surprise.

I’ve always been taught hallmarks of the expected Jewish messiah in light of the era in which Jesus lived-at a time when the Romans controlled the land-and thus the traditional church teaching that they were expecting a strongly military figure who would lead a rebellion and rid them from the chains of Rome.I suppose it doesn’t shock me to learn they merely expected this to be a prophet or warrior king, I’m just surprised to learn the divine appointment of the figure is so restrained, though im perhaps underrating how much reverence Jews may have for their prophets.
