As with many things with foreign policy, I think it’s easy to see things from the US’ vantage point. I have a hard time thinking that there is a “guarantee” that both nations will equally respect peace discussions led by the U.S.. Abbas clearly understands the close relationship Israel has with the U.S., and I think basic human nature would call that alliance into question and be tinged with skepticism about how a plan would fairly shake out between the two. I think there would need to be more of a connection/momentum between the U.S. and Abbas for conversations to be taken more seriously and feel more even-handed.
