Reply To: What were some of your primary takeaways after reading Matti Friedman’s “There Is No ‘Israeli-Palestinian Conflict’”?

I also really enjoyed the big picture view of things. I think the temptation to see the situation through such a narrow lens probably ties into the other topic for this section: the us versus them nature of this issue.

For whatever reason, whether it be short human attention spans or the egotism of leaders or the simple profitability of angst and consternation, the narrow way this debate is usually framed only serves to exacerbate tensions. It’s funny to consider the irony: to more properly help foster peace between Israelis, Palestinians, and Christians, it will take both a more intimate view and understanding between the groups-more personal relationships built and bred-while also requiring the big picture understanding of the factions and peoples at play, the history, the geography, and so on.

Big picture understanding encourages little picture relations.
