The ongoing conflict between the PKK and Turkey is honestly one of the most fascinating, but overshadowed, conflicts in the Near East. It is another group of people who have a right to self-determination but have yet to create a state. I sympathize with the Kurds, because they have been regularly used as pawns to advance other nations’ goals. The United States gladly worked with the Kurds to fight and defeat ISIS, though the relationship appears complicated by US-Turkey relations. While I don’t know if the Kurds are seeking the creation of a formal state, I feel as though more could be done to help them in the Near East as they seem to have been regular allies to the United States.
