Thinking about the world in terms of a “Western Tradition” is so essential, because it shows that what is happening in America today is deeply connected to what happened in Israel thousands of years ago. In his book The Roots of American Order, for instance, Russell Kirk defines the western tradition as an unbroken line of thought stretching through five cities — Jerusalem, Athens, Rome, London, and Philadelphia.
