The unintended consequences of American policies are so important to study. I think in many ways, they are a product of a policymaking class with neither regional expertise nor the more generalized virtue of prudence. Studying history is far more important than the theoretical study of international relations, but unfortunately most American policymakers are ignorant of both foreign regions’ history and our own.
