I worry with drones that American policymakers see drones as an easy answer to a complicated policy question. This was especially a problem with President Clinton’s administration in the 1990s and their “cruise missile diplomacy.” Rather than eliminating Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda as threats to Middle East security and American lives, his approach seemed to embolden Islamist radicalism. That said, there is assuredly a sound application of UAVs in modern warfare.
