Benjamin, you raise an interesting question about the involvement of the French in the region. My history of politics is very limited, but it is clear to see that the space left after the colonial rule ended definitely contributed to the conflict we see today. I too hope for a day when Syria’s ethnic and religious groups can live in a stable country. I wonder how a strong, free Syria would impact the Near East and global politics.
